Emily is home and her sisters Frances and Joyce have made it back to Knoxville. Frances will spend the night there and head on to Lexington sometime tomorrow.
Yesterday they stopped in Montgomery to get some pecans and some delicious butter pecan ice cream. As they were walking back to the car to head on to Atlanta, Emily took a really nasty fall. There was a truck parked that was somewhat blocking the sidewalk, and as she maneuvered to get around it, she stumbled and with her hands full she lost her balance. Steve was walking right behind her and said that she went down and hit her head on the curb with a loud thump. He thought for sure she had suffered a fractured skull. They got her up and her head was bleeding pretty profusely. They got her into the car and she asked for some ice and a washcloth to clean up with and told them that she'd really like to finish her ice cream if they would get it for her. (It had landed in some bushes!)
It took Steve a bit of persuading to get her to agree to visit the Emergency Room, but in fact that's exactly what they did. So they ended up spending long into the night with Mom being looked at. She ended up with 12 stitches over her right eye - it's also very swollen and beginning to turn black and blue. She has also broken her thumb. But the CT scan showed that her head is fine, and she passed all the lucidity tests.
Tomorrow she'll call her primary care doctor and get a referral to see an orthopedic doctor for her thumb. She is also supposed to see someone to check out her stitches, and she'll need to go get her glasses fixed since they got all bummed up.
Anyway, she's fine - and back home!
