I found the onion sets at ACE Hardware. I planted them today. Since my thoughts are caught up with the garden, I'd like to share a meditation written by Rick Hamlin who writes for Guideposts.
What do I get from my garden? A few leaves of mint, some basil, a couple of cherry tomatoes, about five peony blossoms, one rosebud, and some parsley. An exceedingly modest crop, you may think. But my garden gives me an excuse to dig in the damp soil, to pull weeds with my bare hands, to clip a hedge and smell the crushed grass, to shake the petals from a flower, to feel the earth under my nails. To warm myself in the afternoon sun, to look for the rainbow in a spray of water, to catch a ladybug on my finger and let it fly away - not without making a wish - to know there's always another season ahead in case this season feels too warm or cold. The winter's frost will fade into spring's rains, followed by summer's heat and then autumn's leaves. My garden takes me away from my checkbook and my unanswered e-mail. I'm reminded that there are things more permanent - and fleeting - in life, like dandelions, bees, and green blades of grass that you can hold between your fingers and blow on so they sound like an oboe. What does my garden give me? Patience, peace, perspective, and a chance to talk to my Maker. What better harvest?
