April 27, 2010

Emily went to the dentist today.  She's had a temporary crown for quite awhile and today she had the permanent one done.  She's glad to have that done.

Later this morning, she worked on her banking business.  It's been quite a process to get it all straightened out.  At one time, it seemed as though it was all done, and then the bank told her she still needed to change over an account.  This time, perhaps it will be right.  All her deposits are going where they are supposed to go, and she thinks that she's gotten her automatic payments transferred to the appropriate accounts.

Later this afternoon, she took the truck and drove over to Home Depot and bought some straw and some garden soil.  She was intent on getting some straw that had been sterilized so she wouldn't have to deal with weed seeds in it, but she said that the clerk she spoke with didn't seem to know.  She told Emily that it didn't have any seeds in it.  Once she got home, Valdis stopped by for a visit and she got him to put the straw and soil in the out building around back.

And finally this evening she went to church for a session meeting.  She says that she doesn't see how she can squeeze much more out of the day, although she'd going to try to go through some of her mail before bedtime.

April 25, 2010

Today Emily went to church and then out with the lunch group to a place in Cleveland.  It was late afternoon before she got home.

She and Lynn went to the cemetery.  They have closed the temporary road that was there this winter; there is currently another temporary road that goes up to that section, so it's still very easy to get to.  They have also sodded the row of graves where Gene is buried.  It looks very nice.

The cemetery was very lovely today.  Emily brought some spring flowers to decorate the grave.  It was very windy and the vase kept blowing over.  Emily finally put it on the other side of the grave marker and it seemed a bit more protected from the wind.

April 22, 2010

Emily had two doctor visits today. She went to the nurse practitioner at Dr. Cannon's office and got her stitches out.  She said that the stitches were done with very fine thread and that they were difficult to get out, but that the place is barely noticeable.  The nurse practitioner put steri-strips on the place and then a bandaid over it. She then went to see the hand doctor.  She then went to see the hand doctor.  He says that she has a bone chipped in her first joint.  He made a splint for her thumb which is much smaller than the cast that they put on in the emergency room.  She has to keep it on all the time except when she is washing her hand so that it stays straight.  She is a bit provoked that she has to keep it on for at least 6 weeks.  She says the thumb is a really good invention and that it's really hard for her to get things done without it.

Later in the afternoon, she worked in the garden and planted more peas and some beans.  She also spent some time in the afternoon getting some of her banking straightened out.  She's been without access to a computer for a few days because her monitor quit - Alan took a monitor down and got her fixed up so now she has access to her e-mail again.

April 20, 2010

Today Emily went to be seen by the nurse practitioner in her primary care doctor's office and they found her to be in pretty good shape.  They also made her an appointment with an orthopedic doctor who specializes in the hand to take a look at that broken thumb.  It is annoying her because it's wrapped up so much that it makes it difficult for her to do anything much.  She also went to see a nurse practitioner at the eye doctor's office.  It seems that her eye looks a whole lot worse than it really is.  She was also going to have her glasses fixed.

She has already begun getting back into the routine of her daily Chattanooga life!  There's not much that can keep Emily down!

April 19, 2010

Mom spent the day getting herself back into the routine of home.  When she woke her eye was pretty swollen and black and blue.   She called her doctor and discovered that she was not in today.  She'll call back tomorrow to get a referral for an orthopedic doctor to look at her thumb, and to see what she might need to do about her eye.  In the meantime, she called the hospital in Montgomery and has them sending the x-ray electronically to her doctor!  It's great to live in a time when it's so easy to transfer information.

This evening she had a joint session meeting at church and she doctored up her eye so that she wouldn't look so beat up.  She put a skin colored band aid over the stitches, and then used a heavy hand with concealer on the area of her eye that's so bruised. It's purple and blue both above and below her eye.  Except for the swelling, it did look a little better after she got done with her make up!

April 18, 2010

Emily is home and her sisters Frances and Joyce have made it back to Knoxville.  Frances will spend the night there and head on to Lexington sometime tomorrow.

Yesterday they stopped in Montgomery to get some pecans and some delicious butter pecan ice cream.  As they were walking back to the car to head on to Atlanta, Emily took a really nasty fall.  There was a truck parked that was somewhat blocking the sidewalk, and as she maneuvered to get around it, she stumbled and with her hands full she lost her balance.  Steve was walking right behind her and said that she went down and hit her head on the curb with a loud thump.  He thought for sure she had suffered a fractured skull.  They got her up and her head was bleeding pretty profusely.  They got her into the car and she asked for some ice and a washcloth to clean up with and told them that she'd really like to finish her ice cream if they would get it for her.  (It had landed in some bushes!)

It took Steve a bit of persuading to get her to agree to visit the Emergency Room, but in fact that's exactly what they did.  So they ended up spending long into the night with Mom being looked at.  She ended up with 12 stitches over her right eye - it's also very swollen and beginning to turn black and blue.  She has also broken her thumb. But the CT scan showed that her head is fine, and she passed all the lucidity tests.

Tomorrow she'll call her primary care doctor and get a referral to see an orthopedic doctor for her thumb.  She is also supposed to see someone to check out her stitches, and she'll need to go get her glasses fixed since they got all bummed up.

Anyway, she's fine - and back home!

April 16, 2010

from Joyce's Point of View

The Three Matriarchs traveled once more to Seaside Beach, where we mailed some post cards from the TINY LITTLE POST OFFICE (only three people can stand at the window at one time...) anc chatted with the postmaster, Pat.  She hand-canceled the cards so that postmark will show Seaside.  We wanted some P.O. cards, but she said that they were all sold out.  Frances liked the bookstore across the way, as well as the toy store where she found the neatest "Frances ball" (it changes colors when you throw it...  (she'll have to demonstrate.)  Emily gifted me and Frances with a lovely batik scarf, which can be worn as a sarong, a belt, etc.  I'll demonstrate THAT!

We inquired about Key Lime Pie, and were told by the locals that the VERY BEST and BIGGEST piece would be on our way back from Seaside toward Destin at Grayton Beach at a place called The Red Bar.  (It had red lights inside...Frances got a photo) but it was gray outside.  Our server brought the menu...a 4 foot chalkboard with menu and prices...(Frances got a photo.)  Then Emily asked if we could have one piece of pie to share...he complied...it was BIG! and GOOD!  Then Emily decideed to buy a WHOLE PIE, which we took to Russell's and Tina's where we had dinner with them, her sister Laura and Steve.  A WONDERFUL dinner and very SPECIAL visiting.

Pat had left her 1998 BMW convertible for us to drive while here...we enjoyed it a lot.  We felt a little like the cartoon character MAXINE for a few days.  But we had not tried to get the top down...we waited for Steve to come help with that.  When we got in the car to go to Russell's, the top got STUCK! SO...we were unable to let our hair fly in the breeze after all! But we had a lovely time, and do so appreciate the time we had to relax and hope to have the BIG VAN SANT LIST to e-mail the many loved ones in our family...compliled by Joyce.

P.S.  When we got back to Steve's place and punched the UP button on the elevator, it opened ONLY ONE INCH...tried the other side, and the same thing happened.  We were not up to climbing the 14 flights up, so Steve figured out a way to wind around the other units, via THEIR elevator side, where we managed to get into Steve's place.

wednesday...

we ate irish oatmeal for breakfast. it was different. i had a big bowl with
brown sugar and cream, and even though it was really good, i was full before i
finished. emily had a much smaller serving, and joyce had a 'mother-bear
portion. it is necessary to chew this kind of oatmeal!

we went out to visit the pools before the sun shone upon them, and we stayed
about 45 minutes with joyce and emily in the hot tub and frances first in the
upper warm pool for exercises and then in the hot tub. when the sun was upon us
we went in for showers and shampoos and rolled hair. we are to go out this
evening with the mcswains.(they are Lauren's in-laws) aha! i found a capital l!

Emily has had her fingernails polished, and Joyce her toenails. Frances came
already seen to. We are sufficiently presentable with an invitation to eat at
the Bone Fish restaurant. (where Frances will select something from the menu
that does not spend a lot of time in water.)

The beauty of our vacation abode is like a picture of Eden! However, we have not
encountered any animals other than humankind. We met a very nice gentleman who
introduced himself as Kim and said he is a proprietor here. (That's not the
word he used). He helped us find our way to the showers and spa in building
one, and he told us about a good place to have lunch 'on site'. Perhaps we can
do that one day. Today we had simple fare within our own lovely walls.

Emily has been sewing. Joyce has been at computer and kitchen. Frances has been
reading. We are all laughing at least once every half hour. We did two loads of
laundry, and we will go out again tomorrow with Tina,..lunch and shopping for
shoes.

GREETINGS - from Emily, Frances and Joyce

The matriarchs of the Van Sant family are sending you a message from our retreat
in Florida. Emily, Frances, and Joyce are spending time at Steve and Pat's place
in Destin, Florida. We were were privileged to have Steve chauffeur us since he
was coming this direction on a job assignment. We are delighted to have this
time to visit with Russell and Tina as well, for they live just a few miles away
in Ft. Walton Beach.

Suddenly it's already Tuesday! Russell, Tina and Steve were with us for
breakfast and then we three aunts headed out for lunch at Rosemary Beach.
Steve, Pat and family have served for several years in the Lighthouse Ministry
at Rosemary Beach. We stopped on the way back to take a photo of Alys Beach,
then we were briefly at Seaside, an interesting and pretty little community on
the gulf.

We plan to update the Family List while we are here. If you have not sent us
changes since 2002, please email your latest information IMMEDIATELY!

We love you!

Emily, Frances, Joyce

April 13, 2010

Emily, Frances, and Joyce have settled in now in their vacation spot.  Steve and Pat have left a convertible down there to have when they make visits.  Sometimes Steve and Pat drive down, and Steve goes off to work for a few days, so the car lets Pat get around and do her thing.  So this week, "The Queens" as Daniel Judge has called them, have the convertible to drive around.

The three sisters have promised to write some posts for the blog.  We'll see if they are able to find the time away from the excercise rooms, restaurants, beachfront, and general sisterizing to have a chance to write anything down!!

April 12, 2010

Steve packed up the three sisters and they all made the journey from Atlanta to Destin.  They arrived around 8PM this evening.

Steve got them all settled in to the condo and gave them a quick tour of the facilities.  They will have a good time with the pool, the recreation rooms, maybe even the weight room.  From the balcony they can see the ocean as well as the bay.

Joyce and Steve went out to bring in some pizza for a late dinner.  Steve will head out to work in south Georgia for a few days and leave the sisters there to enjoy themselves.

Sunday, April 11, 2010

Emily will be spending a few days with her three sisters this next week.

This evening Frances and Joyce drove down and picked her up and headed toward Atlanta.  They are going to spend the night with Steve and Pat and then head down to Destin to relax and spend a few days.  It will be good for them to relax and have some sister time.

We should have reports from the beach from time to time.

April 10, 2010

I found the onion sets at ACE Hardware. I planted them today. Since my thoughts are caught up with the garden, I'd like to share a meditation written by Rick Hamlin who writes for Guideposts.

What do I get from my garden? A few leaves of mint, some basil, a couple of cherry tomatoes, about five peony blossoms, one rosebud, and some parsley. An exceedingly modest crop, you may think. But my garden gives me an excuse to dig in the damp soil, to pull weeds with my bare hands, to clip a hedge and smell the crushed grass, to shake the petals from a flower, to feel the earth under my nails. To warm myself in the afternoon sun, to look for the rainbow in a spray of water, to catch a ladybug on my finger and let it fly away - not without making a wish - to know there's always another season ahead in case this season feels too warm or cold. The winter's frost will fade into spring's rains, followed by summer's heat and then autumn's leaves. My garden takes me away from my checkbook and my unanswered e-mail. I'm reminded that there are things more permanent - and fleeting - in life, like dandelions, bees, and green blades of grass that you can hold between your fingers and blow on so they sound like an oboe.   What does my garden give me? Patience, peace, perspective, and a chance to talk to my Maker. What better harvest?

April 9, 2010

How quickly a day passes by! I was up just a little later this morning. I finished reading 'The Help" for PEO Book Club last night. So I slept a little later. We are called the Epilogs.

After doing a few chores around the house, it was time for Liga and me to go out for lunch. We decided to go to the Olive Garden. We both had pasta - it was a nice outing. Liga drove my Volvo and said she liked it. She is a good driver.

On the way home, we stopped at AT&T to take Gene's cell phone off the billing. By this time Liga was needing to get to work at her job at Memorial Hospital.

Valdis came by to help me with some things. I got him to gas up my car, check the air in the tires and vacuum it. Then we came home and he washed the car and cleaned the windows and the inside. Valdis is a careful driver and said he liked the Volvo. After that he helped me with some shelf brackets and put some metal posts in the garden to support the peas and beans. The beans aren't up yet, but the peas are about six inches tall and will need support very soon.

We will look forward to Lynn and Alan coming back home tomorrow evening. I enjoyed seeing the pictures of their visit. Max is a beautiful baby boy!

This has been another very lovely spring day.

April 9, 2010

I had PEO today. We met in the lovely home of Robin Campbell at Eagle Bluff. We had a delicious brunch. The home had a wonderful view of Chickamauga Lake.

Our program was on the Chattanooga Symphony & Opera. It was interesting to hear about their programs for school children such as in school as well as field trips to see performances. We also heard about the history and creation of the CSO. They will produce Amahl and the Night Visitors Opera in November.

I spent some time at ACE Hardware on Hwy 58 and came home with an flat of garden plants. I seem to have caught the gardening bug! Celebrity, Brandywine, Roma and Lemon Boy tomatoes, a yellow pepper along with some other things. I didn't get much done at home today.

We had a nice rain this morning and it took most of the troublesome pollen out. Yesterday the pollen was extremely high.

Gene and I visited Anne and Julien Van Hoorde in Belgium several years ago. Anne had a lovely garden. A plant that I greatly admired was a beautiful yellow jasmine vine. Sometime later I found a Carolina Yellow Jasmine vine. I planted it at the left corner of the house near the driveway. Today it is loaded with gorgeous yellow bell shaped flowers, It had put out a few blooms the last two years, but now it is simply covered with the beautiful little yellow bells!!!

Yesterday the old pink dogwood in the front yard looked like it was about to bloom. There had been a light wind during the night and this morning I looked out the kitchen window and beheld the tree in full bloom!

Gene's little 'Wolf River' apple tree has outdone itself . It is full of apple blossoms. Maybe we will get some apples this time. Lynn's tree produced several apples last year. Ours had two apples on it! I cooked Lynn's and they were very good.

Today I put out three humming bird feeders, two suet cakes, two thistle bags and two regular bird feeders,.
This winter we had so many blackbirds that I had to stop putting the feeders out. I sure hope they don't come back! The Goldfinch and the Humming Birds should be here soon. I've been seeing Cardinals and lots of Robins.

I planted TFI tomato seed, Onion seed, and Whitehalf runners (beans) and some Cladium. I also had some blue and pink Wood Hyacinths and some Grape Hyacinths all of which should have been planted a good while ago.

Amy Wright came and weeded the Iris and relocated some perienniels. She is a good gardener.

Liga came by after work for a short visit. We planned a lunch outing for Friday. She said she might try life guarding at 1st Cumberland this summer, where she and Valdis did their swim team training. Valdis worked at 1stCP last summer and was able to rescue three small children who were having serious trouble in the pool.

(Liga took the pictures on today's blog!)

April 5, 2010

Today was get the taxes done day.  Jonathan Edwards came down from Lexington and helped Emily get her taxes put together.  He's been helping them do taxes for several years now.

Jonathan drove down to Joyce's house and helped her with her taxes and then on down to Emily's.  Lynn had a chance to go by and visit with them at lunchtime and get caught up on family goings on.  Jonathan drove back up to Knoxville in the afternoon - he was going to work on her computer a bit.

This afternoon, Emily worked for a bit in the garden.  She already has spinach coming up from a fall planting.  She served it for lunch today in a salad and was quite proud of how good it was.

April 4, 2010

Today Alan and Lynn took Emily to the Salvation Army sunrise service at the National Military Cemetery. The service started at just a bit before 7:30, just as the sun was beginning to peep above Missionary Ridge.  It was a nice service and was attended by a fairly large crowd.  After the service was over they drove over to visit Gene's grave site.  It was a pretty tearful moment.  They've done some work on the two rows of graves that are now in place.  It looks as though they may be ready to put sod in before long.

Later in the morning Emily went to Sunday School.  Lynn and Alan and Valdis and Kailee joined her for Easter Services at First Cumberland Church.

Then later this evening, she went to dinner with Gene's cousin Mia.  Mia was entertaining her son's grandparents, Barbara and Sid Glatter, who've come down from New York to take care of Clyde for the week while he's on spring break and she's still working.  It was a lovely dinner and a nice opportunity to get to know Clyde's grandparents.

All of Steve's family gathered in Nashville today to celebrate Madison's 1st birthday.  Emily drove over yesterday with Sarah and Ryan and enjoyed getting to see everyone.

Lauren (Madison's Mom), Ryan's mother, and Aunt Sarah were busy getting the refreshments ready for the birthday party to begin.

That big cupcake in the middle was the birthday cake, and Madison had a really good time eating the icing.

Emily is back home this evening.  Patrick was needed to be back in Atlanta tonight and he drove her back home.

April 2, 2010

I was thinking about Madison celebrating her first birthday on March 31st.

It was just about a year ago today that Steve took Gene and me over to Nashville for our first introduction to our precious little Great Grand Daughter; Madison Claire McSwain. Madison started to walk about a week ago and is gaining confidence in her new independence. She is growing up quickly. Steve and his family are spending the Easter weekend with Madison, Lauren and Ryan in Nashville. We miss Gene especially at times like this, but I am thankful that he had a chance to meet Madison just about a year ago today.

April 1, 2010

Another beautiful spring day - I was working in the house this morning when Valdis called to say he could come by and work in the yard for me.  We put in a stake to straighten the little weeping cherry that is blooming so beautifully.

We also got a good start on some projects. Valdis' friend called to say that he needed help getting his car to the garage. So Valdis went to help his friend; he promised to come back as soon as he could.  It is so easy for me to stay outside on such a beautiful day, so I kept finding little jobs to do.Four thirty found me still outside! I bought myself a pair of bright pink boots to keep my feet clean when I'm doing garden and yard work.

Tom Carroll called to ask if I'd like to have the garden tilled today. Two young men came and spread the grass clippings on the garden and tilled it. They also cut the willow tree stump. Maybe I'll get some more peas and some beans planted.

Steve is coming by for a brief visit on his way to Nashville for Madison's BIRTHDAY! She was one year old yesterday March 31st! Pat went earlier to help make preparations.

Tonight I went to the Maundy Thursday service at 1st Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Dr. Carver led us in a moving meditation. Phyllis, Lillian, Dean, and Thelma were there. I missed Gene!
